MUTUELLES IMPACT: Portrait of ErgoSanté financed by the Mutuelles Impact Fund

Mutuelles Impact has invested €3 million in ErgoSanté, a creator of ergonomic solutions for able-bodied and disabled people. Mutuelles Impact is the first social and environmental impact investment fund dedicated to health and medico-social services. It was created in November 2020 at the initiative of Mutualité Française and 45 mutual insurance companies.

 

Mutuelles Impact finances the development of innovative companies in the fields of prevention, access to care, and support for patients and caregivers. It supports young companies as well as more mature companies that have a social and environmental impact. Of the €53 million from its first fundraising in November 2020, Mutuelles Impact has committed €11.5 million to support five companies (ErgoSanté, Winncare, MindDay, Lifeaz and Kiplin). The fund is managed by XAnge (Siparex group) in partnership with Investir&+, leading players in innovation and impact capital.

Samuel Corgne, its founder and manager, presents his company and explains his objectives for developing his company thanks to financing from Mutuelles Impact.

From office chairs to exoskeletons, physical assistance systems that adapt to the body's needs, equipment that improves working conditions is now better regarded. Since the pandemic, the company Ergosanté, which produces ergonomic work equipment, has been receiving more and more orders. We met with its founder Samuel Corgne.

Is the issue of workstation ergonomics better taken into account in companies today?

Samuel Corgne: When it comes to choosing professional equipment, the health prevention aspect is now better considered by companies. Awareness was raised with the Covid crisis and the advent of teleworking. No one had time to equip themselves and everyone was slumped over in their kitchen chair or sofa, which led to many health problems, particularly back pain. The issue of returning to the workplace has led companies to think about the layout of their spaces, their attractiveness, to make employees want to return to work. The comfort and ergonomics of office equipment, to avoid the appearance of musculoskeletal disorders, is at the heart of this reflection.

What about manual occupations? What solutions exist for more physical jobs?

S. C.: Among the solutions developed to improve working conditions are exoskeletons, physical assistance systems that adapt to the needs of the human body. Personally, I really don't like the term 'exoskeleton', which can conjure up a world of science fiction, of transhumanism, and give this device a dimension of increasing human capacities, of increasing performance... That's not the objective at all! This equipment reduces the difficulty of working by relieving the back and neck and compensating for infirmities. I therefore prefer the name "physical assistance device".

Are these exoskeletons reserved for high-tech industries?

S. C.: The world market for exoskeletons is growing rapidly. If it is currently worth millions of euros, it should be worth between 2 and 5 billion by 2023! Prices are becoming very attractive and more and more professionals are using these solutions, especially when they perform repetitive movements, such as people working in sorting centres, surgeons or dairy farmers milking cows. The issue of the lack of specific equipment for disabled people is at the heart of the difficulties encountered by disabled workers, whose unemployment rate is twice that of the national average.

Waste from office furniture represents a volume of 250,000 tonnes1 per year. A large part of this waste, and in particular chairs, has a significant recycling potential. Ergosanté's Aigoual seat, presented... at the Mont Aigoual (DR)

Ergosanté is a manufacturer of ergonomic seats and exoskeletons in Anduze, and is a leading company in its sector, but also in its commitment to the ecological, energy and climate transition.

The Cévennes-based company, which has 120 employees, half of whom are based in Anduze, is involved in a cross-disciplinary approach, a commitment supported by its partners such as Bpifrance, the Public Investment Bank. The company's sales manager Arnaud Declomesnil tells us more about the concrete actions undertaken by Ergosanté.


Objectif Gard : Your company is involved in ergonomic solutions. The link with the climate, the ecological and energy transition is not necessarily obvious at first sight. How important are these issues for Ergosanté ?

Arnaud Declomesnil: It is quite central, especially in the last year and a half. The link may not be obvious, but to make our products, we have components. We can choose them next door, or far away. We had already started in 2018 a shift to short circuits, we wanted local, or at least European partners. Good for us, because there were supply disruptions that enabled us to complete this change more quickly and we managed to transform our entire production unit with locally sourced products. For our exoskeletons, the composite fibre is made in Alès and the fabric is cut out here, for example. There are also details: when we buy cars, we make sure that they are manufactured nearby, and when we choose adhesives, they are solvent-free. We also offer products with recycled materials as an option.

 

So these are very concrete actions.

Exactly, with another aspect of corporate social responsibility (CSR, editor's note) in mind, by creating local employment. Today we have a production unit for seats whose wood comes from Occitania, assembled in Anduze. So, even if a boat gets stuck in the Suez Canal, we don't care! An anecdote: before, we used to buy our headrest mechanisms abroad, and with the history of the Suez Canal we had a break. We realised that we could work with an ironmonger 90 metres from our home, and to replace a plastic ball joint, we called in a carpenter to make it in wood. We became independent in the production of headrests, and for exactly the same cost. It also allowed us to hire an extra person. In addition, we are in the process of obtaining the EnVol label on the environmental side.

So these actions are a CSR tool for Ergosanté?

These are things that we have wanted to do for a long time, and it just so happens that CSR is becoming fashionable. We are therefore moving into the labelling phase, for us it is just a matter of filling in a paper to say what we have been doing for a long time. For example, we have a project for a new building to double our production, and on this occasion the whole company will be self-consuming and energy positive. This is planned for the end of the year, with Bpifrance as a partner. In addition, we have just started a new activity, Ecosiège, in August. The concept is to recover used seats, dismantle them and recondition them with our employees from the adapted company. The idea is to close the loop.

Is there staff support for these solutions?

There is no constraint for the staff, it is even a plus internally. The idea is that employees will take up the idea and that these solutions will become a reflex.

Does the fact that the company is located at the foot of the Cevennes, in Anduze, play a role in its commitment?

It is perhaps easier to think about nature when it is right in front of you than when you are in a high-rise building in La Défense. Afterwards, the difficulty is that we are often perceived as small companies from the farthest reaches of the Cévennes, whereas on exoskeletons, we are one of the 25 most successful companies in the world. But by being closer to nature, we are undoubtedly more concerned.

Anduze, August 25, 2021: ErgoSanté, a technological player in the social and solidarity economy dedicated to health and well-being at work, is launching a new version of its HAPO exoskeleton, the HAPO MS, designed to relieve the upper limbs, shoulders and elbows.

Launched in mid-2020 by Ergosanté, the HAPO - a posture harness designed for anyone needing back assistance - is now being sold in about 100 units per month, 50% of which are exported. Its success can be explained by its original design, based on composite materials, which makes it a reliable, simple, effective and affordable product.
Based on growing acceptability and in response to needs observed in the field, Ergosanté is now launching the HAPO MS, specifically adapted for shoulders, in a context of working at half height. The HAPO MS is suitable for workstations requiring repetitive handling of objects, prolonged holding of the arms in front of the body or all "arms forward" postures impacting the members of the upper body. It can be used in many sectors: industry, distribution and shops, health, food processing, logistics, sorting.
The HAPO MS has already been used in several farms, particularly for milking.
Manufactured in France, in Anduze, the HAPO MS retains all the qualities of the HAPO range, in particular its accessibility, with a price of less than 2,000 euros excluding tax.

ErgoSanté, a Gard-based company specialising in health and well-being at work, based in Anduze, has brought in the Mutuelles Impact fund, managed by XAnge (Siparex Group) and Investir&+.

ErgoSanté designs and distributes ergonomic equipment adapted to the specific needs of companies and their employees to improve the working conditions of able-bodied and disabled people, by injecting technological innovation into its customised solutions. Created in 2013 by Samuel Corgne, ErgoSanté, which has the status of an adapted company, now employs 120 expert staff in 16 agencies to support companies throughout France and, since 2020, internationally.

Created at the end of 2020 on the initiative of the Mutualité Française, the Mutuelles Impact fund aims to invest in companies with a high social impact in the prevention, care and medico-social sectors. 50 million from the Fédération nationale de la mutualité française and 45 member mutuals. With a final target of €100 million, it aims to become " the first mutual investment fund with a social and environmental impact in the health and medico-social sector and one of the largest impact funds in France".

For Catherine Grandpierre, President of the Supervisory Committee of Mutuelles Impact and member of the Bureau of the Mutualité Française, " Ergosanté reconciles economic efficiency and general interest: it is an innovative company, socially committed as an adapted company and which is now moving into the circular economy, with the recycling of office equipment .

Samuel Corgne is part of this new generation of entrepreneurs who combine a very strong ambition with a desire to make a difference in the world and in the lives of those around him," emphasises Andreas Gall, Deputy Managing Director of XAnge/Siparex Proximité Innovation. We also share the conviction that innovation is an essential lever for triggering a tenfold impact. The Mutuelles Impact fund will be able to provide synergies.

Create a recycling channel for seats

In 2019, ErgoSanté had achieved a turnover of 7 million euros, growing by 15% in 2020 (instead of the expected 70%). With these new financial resources, ErgoSanté wants to accelerate its development strategy by investing in innovation and the development of new products, particularly in exoskeletons and analysis tools based on artificial intelligence, " specifically deap learning: we train the algorithms to recognise the human body and compare movements with ergonomic standards in order to quantify the ways in which workstations can be improved," explains Samuel Corgne.

ErgoSanté also wants to invest in its production and recycling capacities: "We are launching the recycling of chairs which, until now, were sent to the waste disposal centre. We collect them from our customers or from Valdelia (eco-organisation for the collection and recycling of non-household furniture waste, editor's note), we rework them and we create a channel for recycled seats.

Finally, the company wants to boost its international growth. Its products are currently distributed in New Zealand, the United States, Holland, Germany, Brazil and Canada. Although exports account for 25% of its turnover, Samuel Corgne believes that "in a few years' time, this will be the majority ".

Working on the prevention of occupational diseases

I am delighted that ErgoSanté is one of Mutuelles Impact's first investments," says Samuel Corgne. Beyond the financial resources and visibility provided, it is a recognition of the social and societal commitment that was at the basis of the company's creation. It is also a great opening to the mutualist world, which constitutes an immense reservoir of commercial synergies for ErgoSanté.

The director hopes to be able to work soon with mutual insurance companies on questions of health and well-being of their employees. Another possible area of partnership: " defining systems for the prevention of occupational illness or accidents at work ".

In 2020, ErgoSanté had announced the construction of a new factory in Anduze for the manufacture of ergonomic seats, a 1,000 m2 building requiring an overall investment of 2 million euros (including 1.2 million euros for the building). In November 2020, the manager received confirmation of a State grant of 800,000 euros as part of the "Territoires d'Industrie" programme, as part of the overall 2 million euro financing project.

We are making progress, the building permit has been validated and we will be able to buy the land," announces Samuel Corgne. And in the meantime, we have bought another 600 m2 building to start recycling seats.

Anduze, 22 June 2021 - ErgoSantéa technological player in the social economy dedicated to health and ErgoSanté, a technological player in the social and solidarity economy dedicated to health and well-being at work, is presenting a new mobile application at the Preventica trade fair this week that allows ergonomists to generate scientific data on the physical stress of workers during their activity. Called LEA, this application is available free of charge to all professionals concerned with the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.

On the occasion of the PREVENTICA trade fair, which will be held in Lyon from 22 to 24 June 2021, Ergosanté is unveiling LEA (Ergonomic Analysis Software), the first postural analysis application designed for ergonomics and health prevention professionals in companies. LEA is being previewed this week to all Health, Safety and Security managers, to those in charge of workstation adjustments, and to those involved in disability in companies.

LEA is an application that provides near-instantaneous access to personalised scientific data on work postures, with the aim of preventing musculoskeletal disorders. LEA uses artificial intelligence to process large quantities of data (deep-learning) and compare the postural profiles thus analysed with bio-mechanical standards (RULA method). Its use allows to objectively highlight the points to be improved, in order to make the prevention measures implemented more effective.

The Alès hospital is currently testing an exoskeleton from the company ErgoSanté in Anduze (Gard). Employees who are confronted with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which account for the majority of sick leave, are getting older. The Hapo could help them to stay in work.

The Hapo, theexoskeleton, designed and manufactured by the company ErgoSanté in Anduze, is currently being tested at the hospital in Alès-en-Cévennes. A work support system - a solution for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders - the ErgoSantéexoskeleton was intended for use in industry, but it seems that with a few adaptations it could prove to be very useful in the hospital environment.

The Gard-based SME, which specialises in solutions for improving working conditions, is counting on sales of around one hundred exoskeletons per month on the North American market, via the distributor Worksmart Innovations.

Nestled in the heart of the Cévennes region of France, ErgoSanté, which employs 120 people at its headquarters and through 15 agencies, is venturing into international markets. The company, which develops solutions to improve workstations, particularly to reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disorders, is setting up in the United States, via Worksmart Innovations, based in North Carolina, which will be the exclusive distributor for Hapo models in the world's largest exoskeleton market, worth around 500 million dollars in 2020. ErgoSanté hopes to sell around 100 products per month, equivalent to current sales in France. Target customers are in the military, industrial, hospital and logistics sectors.

1,500 per unit

 "The Americans are pioneers in new technologies and have a more pragmatic vision, based on the user. In Europe, many standards are being created, which slows down our progress," says Samuel Corgne, director of ErgoSanté, who himself has dual French-American nationality.

In order to break through on the other side of the Atlantic, the SME is banking on aggressive marketing, with sales prices of around 1,500 dollars per unit, i.e. three times less than the competition. This difference is made possible by lighter, more discreet models that "do not overuse sensors and Big Data", says the director. Margins are also reduced.

In France, ErgoSanté sells its solutions to winegrowers, bricklayers, industry and logistics. A test is about to start at the Alès hospital centre, with nurses and care assistants. In Anduze, the head office, Ergosanté Technologie has a design office with about ten engineers. On the industrial side, the group will take delivery in January of a building with an additional 1,000m2. ErgoSanté Production will grow from 20 to 50 people by 2024, and 80% of its staff are disabled. After a global turnover of 8.4 million euros in 2020, the 10 million euro mark should be reached this year.

One concern, however, for the coming months is the supply of raw materials. ErgoSanté is finding it increasingly difficult to source mechanical parts, fabrics, composite materials and polymers. "Not a week goes by without a stock shortage," worries Samuel Corgne.

Anduze, 29 March 2021 - ErgoSanté, a technological player in the social economy dedicated to health and well-being at work, is accelerating its international development with the opening of its first subsidiary, ErgoSchutz, based in Öhringen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. ErgoSanté is thus establishing itself in the most industrialised country in Europe to distribute its flagship product range for export: exoskeletons dedicated to the protection of industrial workers.

ErgoSanté will present its latest exoskeleton, the HAPO, a posture harness for anyone who needs back assistance and/or whose workstation is considered back-breaking. The HAPO reduces strain on the lumbar region and protects the intervertebral discs by redirecting strain from the upper body to the thighs using fibreglass springs and a support capacity of up to 14kg.

Work-related back disorders have been widely documented in Germany. Companies are particularly sensitive to the return on investment of preventive measures and are looking for solutions to address these increasingly common pathologies. For example, in 2018, the mutual insurance company DAK-Gesundheit produced the report "Rätsel Rücken" ("The back puzzle"), which reveals the following facts:

  • Back pain is the second most important diagnosis in the incidence of work disability - after respiratory infections;
  • Three quarters of employees complain of back pain at least once a year;
  • The number of emergency room admissions for back pain increased by 80% between 2009 and 2016, to 220,000.

The DAK-Gesundheit study concludes that the health policy goal of getting the back problem under control has not been achieved. Health and industry need innovative solutions. This is where ErgoSanté comes in, offering companies its range of exoskeletons as well as all its workstation solutions for the industrial and service sectors.

The company Ergosanté, based in Anduze in the Gard region, is to benefit from an €800,000 grant which will enable it to expand and recruit around thirty people. The company is benefiting from the part of the recovery plan designed to support industry in the regions.

Inflatable lumbar support, reclining position, adapted backrest... Ergosanté manufactures office chairs according to the morphology, pathologies and budget of its customers. The 90-employee SME is located in Anduze, in the Gard region of France.

"Workers' comfort" first

The rate of production should increase in the coming months in the workshop where 15 people work, including 12 people with disabilities. The DNA of our company is the protection of people in their work, in their physical integrity," explains Samuel Corgne, the company's founder and manager. Both internally and in the products we design, we ensure that workers are comfortable. Ergosanté is one of the winning companies of the fund for the acceleration of industrial investment in the regions, which is part of the government's recovery plan.

Endowed with €150 million in 2020 (€400 million by 2022), this fund has absorbed the "Territoire d'industries" programme launched by former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe in November 2018.

Internalise 80% of production

A grant of €800,000 from this programme was awarded to Ergosanté to relocate its production. Of the 10,000 chairs we sell each year," explains Samuel Corgne, "7,000 are manufactured in Great Britain, " where there is specific know-how in chair upholstery. "We want to quickly bring 80% of our production in-house. This is a pragmatic move, but also a way of promoting local employment," he adds.

This relocation, also linked to the Brexit, has already started little by little, thanks to the acquisition of a machine designed in Occitania. "To integrate the necessary know-how, this machine makes our job easier. For the moment, it is largely underused by the employees, due to a lack of space," explains Samuel Corgne. In order to grow, Ergosanté needs square metres, and quickly.

30 new hires planned

Of all the company's employees, about fifty work at the Anduze site, in offices that are becoming increasingly cramped. Opposite the existing building, a vast car park is being purchased from the town hall. A hangar will be built there at a total cost of 2 million euros, financed in part by a subsidy from the recovery plan.

Inside, there will be offices and workshops. "We want to increase our production capacity and therefore our storage capacity. This extension will allow us to develop our activities and to recruit around thirty people, in addition to the 25 we have already hired this year," explains the boss.

A favourable context

Even if it remains below forecasts, Ergosanté's activity is doing well and is expected to increase by 15% in 2020. In a context where teleworking is becoming more widespread, Ergosanté's know-how is very timely. According to a study by Santé publique France last October, 10% of teleworkers have developed low back pain. The company has therefore worked to bring cheaper chairs to the market and to develop online sales for individuals and large companies.

Specialising in the design and manufacture of ergonomic seats and new models of exoskeletons, the adapted company ErgoSanté obtained a grant of 800,000 euros as part of the "Territoires d'Industrie" programme. This grant is part of a global financing project of 2 million euros.

This project comprises several stages: acceleration of international development, structuring of the adapted business model, further innovation, training, acquisition of machinery, construction of a new manufacturing workshop.

"The grant from France Relance will speed things up," says Samuel Corgne, director and founder ofErgoSanté. The challenge is to "get our hands back on the manufacturing capacity, to rebalance production between England and Anduze".

50 jobs created between 2020 and 2023

The two UK industrial sites will continue to produce complex tapestries - seats for an amputee or a heavyweight person, etc. - which will be used in the future.

In Anduze, the plant will be expanded by the end of 2021 by 1,000 m2, "which is 1.5 times more than the current surface area. We are awaiting the validation of the project by the town council of Anduze, whose executive has just changed," says Samuel Corgne. The architect is Aitec (architecture, engineering, technical and construction engineering), based in Alès.

This extension is a necessity, whereas e-commerce, via the betterwork.fr website, has been boosted by the development of workstation fittings linked to the boom in teleworking: sale of seats, cushions, mice, briefcases...". But for the moment, we are unable to increase our manufacturing capacity as sales increase," warns Samuel Corgne.

With this new industrial tool, ErgoSanté plans to create 26 direct, non-relocatable local jobs in three years, to be added to the 25 jobs already created this year. The adapted company will thus have to "increase its skills on very complex products". While maintaining its identity as a committed player in the social and solidarity economy. " ErgoSanté is doing its part to promote integration, and that's what makes me thrilled. I'm not interested in working with people who are doing well," concludes Samuel Corgne.

Created in 2013, ErgoSanté employs 90 people in 16 branches. Turnover (€7 million last year) is expected to grow by 10% this year.

Anduze, 13 November 2020 - Ergosanté, a technological player in the social and solidarity economy dedicated to health and well-being at work, today announced the official confirmation by Alès Agglomération of the allocation of a state subsidy of 800,000 euros as part of the "Territoires d'Industrie" programme. This subsidy is part of a global financing project of 2 million euros.

In constant development since its creation, Ergosanté is one of the companies contributing to the strategy of reconquering territories, in this case the Alès Basin where it is established. The €800,000 grant confirmed today by Territoires d'industrie is part of a €2 million global financing programme, comprising €1.2 million in grants, €400,000 in bank loans and €400,000 in equity capital. It aims to finance industrial projects that create jobs and wealth for the region, namely :

  • The construction of a new manufacturing plant for ergonomic seats, which will allow the relocation of part of the production, and the exoskeletons produced by the company;
  • The pursuit of innovation through the development of new models of exoskeletons;
  • The structuring of the adapted business model;
  • Accelerating international development.

On this last point, Ergosanté, having noted a strong interest in its range of exoskeletons internationally, has started to structure its export distribution network and is already present in New Zealand, Holland and the USA. Discussions are in progress with distributors in Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Italy and the United Kingdom. The investments described above are expected to create 26 direct jobs locally over 3 years, as well as many indirect jobs, in the region and at the national level. These will be in addition to the 25 jobs already created this year, despite the health crisis.
